Ventus
THE BOY WHO BECAME THE BLADE
Ventus, also known as Ven, is one of the main protagonists in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. He wielded a Keyblade before Sora, and became an apprentice to both Master Xehanort and Master Eraqus. His best friends are Terra and Aqua, of which he is the youngest.

Ventus was sent to the Keyblade Graveyard and forced to fight Neoshadow Heartless using darkness so that the X-Blade could be forged. Ventus, unable to use the darkness, was knocked unconscious. Xehanort used the power of his Keyblade to unlock Ventus's heart. The darkness in Ventus' heart was removed by Xehanort, severely damaging it. When the darkness was released, it formed first into an orb and then into a creature of pure darkness. Xehanort gives it the name Vanitas.

The damage done to Ventus' heart by Xehanort and later when the X-blade is destroyed leaves his heart severely damaged. Both times, Sora's heart reaches out to mend Ventus's heart. At end of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Ventus' body lies comatose in the Chamber of Waking as his heart is sleeping with Sora, where it can mend and heal, to be returned to Ventus once it has done so.
BACKGROUND
A little ball of optimism and sunshine, Ventus is the type of person who doesn’t have much difficulty befriending people. In fact, befriending people from other worlds became a goal of his after his experience in Radiant Garden. Even if he doesn’t become friends with a person, Ventus still reaches out to them in some way or will go out of his way to help anyone who is in danger, such as Princess Aurora or Snow White. But despite his kindness, Ventus is also the type of person who won’t hold back his words if he believes the other person is in the wrong, such as Aqua.

Ventus is the type of person who treasures his friends, particularly Aqua and Terra. They are his first friends who helped him grow from the empty shell he once was after being dropped off at the Land of Departure by Master Xehanort. He looks up to Terra, seeing him as a role model, and it was their friendship that Vanitas used against him. It was due to his need to help Terra that had him leaving home, despite being ordered to remain at the Land of Departure. He would also immediately jump to Terra’s defense whenever someone would talk bad about him, such as when the Seven Dwarves thought that he was the one who attacked Snow White. However, despite his need to prove that Terra is innocent, Ventus began to develop his own doubts about his friend after meeting the disguised Evil Queen in the Dwarf Woodlands, but hasn’t let it stop him from believing in his friend.

However, this did not mean his bond with Aqua meant to him any less. Aqua has always been the understanding big sister, the one to cheer him up. Ventus treasures her just as much as Terra, despite being upset with her a few times. Given Aqua’s tendency to treat him as a child, Ventus often felt the need to try and prove himself. It is also because of his bond with her that Ventus is able to argue with her when he believes she’s in the wrong, such as arguing with her over Terra in Radiant Garden about whether or not he was becoming close to the Darkness. It is through his bond with Aqua that has helped Ventus awaken from his decade-long slumber, resonating strongly within Sora’s heart with his desire to protect her--whether it would be from the Realm of Darkness or from Vanitas.

Since he’s been sheltered by Terra, Aqua, and Master Eraqus on the Land of Departure since his arrival, there are many things about various worlds that Ventus is still clueless about that he reacts to with innocent curiosity. One example is being in awe of the dwarves, calling them ‘little men’, from the Dwarf Woodlands and being eager to look for a shooting star with the Lost Boys and Tinker Bell in Neverland. Despite his childlike demeanor, Ventus dislikes being referred to as a kid, as shown when Scrooge, after giving him three tickets to Disney Town as thanks for saving him, told him to give the remaining two to “adults”. Ventus is bound to have bouts of impulsiveness, either being quick to anger or running head-first into unknown danger.

Ventus has shown incredible insight and emotional maturity that has gradually developed as he traveled alone. The first glimpse was helping Snow White in the dark forest, telling her it was easy to become scared when alone, and another time was when Ventus showed insight to Phil’s plan to train Hercules regardless of the results of the match. Ventus also willingly left behind the wooden Keyblade Terra gave him while in Neverland, explaining he no longer needed it because there will always be more memories for him, Aqua, and Terra up ahead.

Another thing to note, however, is Ventus’ inability to hold onto negative emotions long. This is due to the fact that his heart was split into two and his darkness took on a physical form named Vanitas. Even after being angry at Master Eraqus for withholding the truth for him, it dissipated quickly as Ventus told Terra that Eraqus was right--he needed to be destroyed. After learning he was meant to become the χ-blade--a powerful Keyblade that can open up Kingdom Hearts--Ventus has shown a willingness to sacrifice himself for his friends, believing he was partially the cause for what happened to the three of them. Once he reunited with them in the Keyblade Graveyard, Ventus pleaded with Aqua and Terra to end his existence, asking them as their “friend”.

In the end, Ventus’ main motivation is his desire to protect his friends. A trait shown when he willingly destroyed the χ-blade and Vanitas, despite knowing by doing so could cause his own heart to become damaged. For him, the sacrifice is worth it as long as he can save Aqua and Terra. Even after his heart fell asleep within Sora’s heart, Ventus was still able to reach out to save Sora from becoming lost in the darkness, granting him his armor for protection.

After waking up from his decade-long sleep, Ventus shows signs of PTSD. For example, when he met Sora face to face for the first time, the face he saw was Vanitas’ instead. This is important because it displayed how much of an influence Vanitas had on Ventus from their last fight. Most of his personality has remained intact with being friendly and cheery, but Ventus has shown to be on the slightly quieter side due to his experiences. He has also shown to accept Vanitas as his darkness, even interrupting Sora to talk to Vanitas one on one. Ventus extended an olive branch to Vanitas to join their side, explaining Vanitas can be his own person, but seems to accept the other boy’s choice when he refuses to join him.
ABILITIES
Ventus is the most balanced fighter in the game. He’s also fastest and most agile out of the trio, which reflects in his primary fighting style of dodging, quick movements and swift combo attacks. Ventus has an affinity for the wind and Light elements and mixes both into several of his techniques and magic attacks.

Ven's primary battle style consists of very fast, wide backhanded strikes with his blade in quick succession to deal damage. His single strikes aren't as powerful as Sora's two-handed strikes or Terra's powerful blows, but his ability to attack quickly makes up for his lower attack power.
